Tamil Nadu: Four child marriages stopped in Trichy villages

TRICHY: Child marriages that were set to take place on Sunday at four places around Trichy district was stopped by district social welfare department with the help of NGO and police on Saturday night. All the four girls, who were 16-year-old, were school dropouts and were set to be married to grooms double their age.
Trichy-based NGO, Sevai, which runs Childline – 1098, received anonymous calls with vital inputs on child marriages scheduled in Thuvarankurichi, Musiri, Thottiyam and Pullambadi of Trichy district.
Members of Sevai alerted district social welfare officer, Trichy, based on which four teams were formed with police personnel to stop these marriages.
Teams reached out to the four families on Saturday night and rescued two children. While they were sent to government-run homes, two other girls will be rescued by Sunday evening.
Two were being raised by single parents and their relatives cited poverty as the main reason for getting them married.
While parents were unable to look after these girls, I Murali Kumar, project director Sevai NGO said that the relatives were desperate to get them married without even printing invitation cards.
Parents of all the four girls were summoned to appear before child welfare committee (CWC) on Monday.
