Mangaluru: The timely intervention of the Mangaluru City police in Ullal limits, prevented a possible case of moral policing after three youth from the minority community and a girl went to a hookah bar on Saturday evening.

According to police, the three youth and the girl had come to a hookah joint in Kuthar at Ullal on Saturday. All of them are engineering students. Upon learning about a girl smoking hookah with boys from the minority community, some activists of a right-wing group alerted the police and asked them to question the students. Many right-wing activists then descended upon the hookah joint.

Police personnel of Ullal station, who learnt about this, feared that a communal flare up could occur, and rushed to the spot. They questioned the students and asked them to leave the place.

According to police and health department, the hookah joint was served a notice as they found that they were in violation of the rules. Sources told TOI that the original owner had leased out the place to another person on Saturday.

Police added that they have warned the management to not flout norms in the future.
