Double episode series premiere ★★★★★

The underworld crime story conceit of the innocent desperate to unshackle himself from his dark legacy is beautifully reworked in James Norton's ambitious London banker, Alex Godman, son of a Russian mobster. Caught between two worlds, his moral predicament is at once fascinating and devastating. Magnificently shot in lavishly dressed, exotic locations, this is a gripping and provocative drama that delves into the contemporary Russian psyche.

There are just enough topical sight gags to keep this cleverly sardonic idea from being suffocated by its intended awkwardness. The Kates are going to have to do more than stumble through their morning-show spoof relying on their opposing personality types and on-air breakdowns if they want to avoid a plight all too frequently dealt their real-world counterparts. Tellingly, the highlight of this episode comes after they make their exit, when two showbiz legends take the floor.

The dramatic lure of this early incarnation of the reno show is that friends will fall out over what they've done to each other's homes. Given that they're forced to enact the visions of professional designers, that seems unfair. More interesting are the bold colour palettes and furniture upcycling ideas that contrast with the minimalist corporate looks of the bigger renovation programs. Mercifully, so far, there's no sign of the sponge painting this show made popular 20 years ago.
