Driving without seat belt will lead to suspension of licence, warns Das
ASRP Mukesh | TNN | Feb 10, 2019, 06:30 ISTRanchi: Chief minister Raghubar Das on Saturday said licence of car drivers, who were caught without their seat belts thrice, would be cancelled. He said the government is working on the modalities for the licence cancellation.
Das made the announcement while addressing the ‘Run for Safety’ programme organised on the penultimate day of the 30th National Road Safety Week 2019 at Sainik Market. Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said, “Disregard for road safety rules is one of the biggest reasons for accidents. Over the years, this disregard has turned into a huge menace. While road safety week programmes like these are meant to sensitise the public for greater good, effective implementation of the laws is also needed to bring the violators to book. We are soon going to be harsh on such drivers by bringing in fresh rules.”
Notably, a couple of years back, similar measures were reportedly announced wherein anyone caught violating traffic rules thrice will have to face cancellation of their licence. But it couldn’t be implemented in letter and spirit owing to lack of proper data.
Talking to TOI, state transport commissioner Praveeen Toppo said the provision of licence cancellation already exists in the Motor Vehicles’ Act, but they are soon going to send fresh orders in this regard.
“About 12 road accidents are reported every day, out of which major casualty happens because of helmet less driving. So to curb it, we are in the process of sending fresh orders to all districts to enforce rules concerning suspension followed by termination of the licences,” he said over the phone.
District transport officer Sanjiv Kumar said for each notified offence, there is a provision for suspension of license for three months. If it is suspended thrice, then the license will get terminated.
He added, “Earlier, we didn’t have online licence and challan (fine) generation system because of which the rule couldn’t be enforced. Now that the manual process has become a passé, we can enforce the rule properly soon after government issues fresh directives.”
