As part of the flood rehabilitation work undertaken by the Navy in Kochi, Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla, Chief of the Southern Naval Command, on Saturday handed over the keys to a house constructed by the force to the family of Babu V.K. at Vevukattu in Muttinakam. The family had lost their dwelling in the floods of last August.

The new house was constructed at a cost of ₹9.35 lakh.

The new house was built as per specifications and suggestions of the house owner, and has two bedrooms, a drawing room, hall and a kitchen, with modern amenities such as vitrified tiles in all the rooms. The project was being steered by INS Venduruthy and has been completed within four months, says a defence release.

Vice Admiral Chawla was accompanied by Sapana Chawla, President of Navy Wives Welfare Association (Southern Region), and other senior officers. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba had visited the damaged house and had assured construction of a new house, for which he had sanctioned special funds to the Southern Naval Command.

Three more houses

Another set of three houses is under construction at Cheriya Kadamakudy for flood victims, which are likely to be completed next month.
