Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, in the Budget, announced the formation four new taluks including Kalasa in Mudigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru. This has been a long pending demand of people in Mudigere taluk, particularly those in Kalasa Hobli.

The residents of villages around Kalasa and Kudremukh had to travel about 100 – 120 kms to reach the taluk headquarters – Mudigere for any official work. With this, the number of taluks in the district goes up to nine. Ajjampura was declared a taluk in 2017.

“All these years we had to travel about 120 kms from Kudremukh to get our work done in the taluk office. For long we had been demanding that the government declare Kalasa a taluk. Leaders of all political parties had joined the protests in this regard. We are glad now the CM has fulfilled our demand,” said Suresh Bhat, secretary of Kudremukh Mulanivasigala Hitarakshana Samiti.

It is expected that all villages under Kalasa hobli and few villages from the neighbouring Balur hobli would be brought together to form the new taluk. When The Hindu contacted Chikkamagaluru Deputy Commissioner M.K. Sreerangaiah, he said the administration was yet to work out the area of the taluk. “The government has proposed it in the budget. Now we have to work out the limits of the taluk and submit a proposal to the government,” he said.
