SHRC orders compensation to kin of deceased fisherman
tnn | Feb 9, 2019, 23:47 ISTThiruvananthapuram: State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the state government to immediately provide compensation to the family of a fisherman who died after sustaining injuries during an accident that happened while fishing in the sea.
Sunny, a native of Balaramapuram, was the only breadwinner of his family. He got injured on February 15, 2017 and died while undergoing treatment. The unexpected demise put wife Rajeswari, his daughter and two grandchildren in a dire situation. As Sunny did not have an active membership in any welfare schemes or boards, he hadn’t been eligible for any compensation from the fisheries department.
So, on humanitarian ground, the SHRC had directed the government to pay a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to the family in May 2018. However, the government though agreed to pay the compensation, has not made the payment yet.
Rajeswari, wife of Sunny had approached the commission for a second time after receiving no response from the government.
“A notice had been forwarded to the revenue additional chief secretary which directed the government to provide the compensation. The response report from the chief secretary stated that a decision was made to release a fund of Rs 1 lakh on January 21, 2019. The order to release the fund was issued on November 7, 2018. On inquiry, SHRC found that the order issued in November was not implemented even in January,” said the order of KSHRC.
In the latest order, SHRC has asked the government to pay an urgent initial payment of Rs 1 lakh to the victim’s family within a month and to inform when the balance Rs 1.5 lakh would be paid.
