Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day trip to the northeast, which he embarked upon on Friday, is his fourth visit to the region in as many months. Across the last five years, he has visited the northeast as Prime Minister more than 30 times.
Before embarking on this trip, he urged people of the country to visit the region and share their pictures on with a special Instagram hashtag. “The beauty of the northeast is spectacular. Do you have pictures of your own northeast visits or glimpses of the spectacular natural beauty of the region? Share them on Instagram using #MagnificentNortheast. I will share some of the posts on my page too!,” he tweeted.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the number of trips the Prime Minister has taken to the northeast shows his commitment to develop the region. “It goes to show how much he cares for the northeastern region. We in Assam are committed to make the state the country’s top state and this is his (Modi’s) support for us,” Sonowal said.
Till March last year, when Modi went to Agartala for the swearing-in of Biplab Deb as the first BJP chief minister of the state, he had made over 25 trips to the region. When he visited Silchar last month, it was his 16th visit to Barak Valley.
“I am grateful to the Prime Minister for the recent approval by the cabinet committee on economic affairs for expansion of the Numaligarh refinery from the current 3.0 MMTPA capacity to a massive 9.0 MMTPA. This has necessitated the 1400-km pipeline, which will now be laid to transport import crude into this refinery to cater to the increased capacity from Paradip Port to Numaligarh at a cost of nearly Rs 23,000 crore,” Sonowal said. “This is the biggest investment ever to happen in our state,” he added.
