Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has invited tenders for a major bridge over the Tel river as a part of the 289-km-long Khurda Road-Balangir new line project. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 23 crore.

The rail line project, sanctioned in 1994-95, will connect the western part of the state to coastal Odisha via Khurda, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur and Balangir. The proposed rail bridge will be constructed over the Tel river, a major tributary of the Mahanadi, near Sonepur town. The length of the bridge will be around one km, which will make it the longest under the new line project.

The state government formed a joint venture with the ministry of railways to carry out the project. ECoR sources said the confluence of the Tel river and the Mahanadi is about 2.5 km away from the proposed bridge site. During peak flood season, the Mahanadi will have a strong impact on the bridge because of the confluence being only a few kilometres away. Keeping this in mind, the railways has proposed to provide 17 spans of 45.70 meter each to the bridge, said the sources.

The railways has carried out soil investigation. Steel girders made in the railway engineering workshop in Mughalsarai will be used in the bridge for better quality. The bridge is expected to be constructed within two years. Other rail line works will also be carried out simultaneously, said a senior railway officer.

The railways has sanctioned Rs 350 crore in the interim budget this year for the Khurda Road-Balangir new line project. Only 66km between Khurda Road and Nayagarh stations from the Khurda Road side has been commissioned. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had flagged off a new train from the Balangir side.
