BHUBANESWAR: Girl students of Utkal University on Friday staged demonstration in front of hostel 7 demanding basic amenities and security in their hostel. Students alleged that the university authorities do not solve their issues despite repeated requests.
A group of hostel inmates staged dharna in the hostel protesting lackadaisical attitude of the university authorities. They said the hostel premises are not cleaned properly. "We have only three water filtering machines for around 400 inmates. Sometimes, we do not get water due to electricity or motor pump issues," said an inmate.
They also requested the university to increase the height of the boundary walls of the hostel 7 to keep it safe. "We do not feel safe because of the walls," said the girls. Even they pointed finger on quality of food served in the hostel.
The girls got angry after hostel authorities delayed in sending of an ill inmate to go to hospital on Thursday night. Debasmita Jena of PG department of Sanskrit fell ill at around 8.30 pm. When Jena's friends asked the hostel authorities to take her to hospital, they waited till her local guardian came. After one and half hours of delay, she was admitted into a hospital. "At first, the student should be hospitalized before her guardians reach the hostel," said friend of Jena.
Later university vice chancellor Soumendra Mohan Patnaik and other officials visited the hospital and discussed with the inmates. He assured the students to solve their issues within next 15 days.
On July 16 last year, girl students of the university had staged demonstration in front of hostel 7 protesting power cut and water problem in their hostel. They had resorted to dharna in the night to attract the attention of the university authorities to address their issues.
They were facing unscheduled power cut in the hostel and it impacted on the supply of water to the hostel.
