Lone lioness of Safari Park bids adieu to sister

T’puram: The authorities of Neyyar Safari Park here had a tough time on Friday trying to pick up the carcass of Sindhu the lioness as her sibling Bindu wouldn't leave her side. It took nearly three hours before they could draw Bindu to her cage.
“They had been inseparable since their birth. Now, we are closely monitoring Bindu for any kind of stress symptoms as she is alone now,” said Dr Dayamon D Mathew, assistant forest veterinary officer, Thiruvananthapuram.

Sindhu’s carcass was cremated on the park premises on Saturday. The 19-year-old had died of respiratory dysfunction and had been ailing as age was catching up to her. Now, her sibling Bindhu has become the lone surviving lioness at the park, which once housed 15 lions.

Sindhu and Bindu were born to a captive lioness at the park. Both, though bogged down by ailments, had maintained their steady diet of 3.5 kg beef daily until three days ago when Sindhu stopped feeding and became emaciated.

The authorities are now in the process of getting two lions from Gujarat. The hybrid nature of Sindhu and Bindhu had been a cause of concern for the proposal to bring new animals from Gujarat. Both of them were not pure Asiatic lions, officials said.

When the park was opened in 1984, there were four animals – three lionesses and a lion.
