Kin allege he was thrashed by cops

A 45-year-old food vendor died under mysterious circumstances in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri, the police said on Saturday. His family has alleged that he was thrashed by the police. The police have, however, denied the allegation.

In order to ensure a fair probe, a magisterial enquiry has been initiated into the matter, DCP (Outer) Seju Kuruvilla said.

Local AAP MLA and Deputy Speaker in the Delhi Assembly, Rakhi Bidlan, has approached the police and sought a fair and speedy investigation into the matter, they also said.

The deceased food vendor, identified as Virender, lived with his family in Mangolpuri.

Around 12.30 p.m. on Friday, Virender, along with his family members approached the Rajpark police station to get issues between his son and his girlfriend resolved. The families of both the parties had come to the police station, a senior police officer said. On Saturday, Virender’s wife alleged that he had been thrashed by police officers inside the police station that led to his death. However, the police said that the victim died at his residence on Friday night.

The exact cause of death will be ascertained after his post-mortem and the Magistrate will decide on the further course of action based on the report, the police said.
