Fire destroys Mapusa Bazaar property

In a major fire incident that occurred in Mapusa market on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, Mapusa Bazaar supermarket, which is run by the Mapusa Consumers Credit Society, was partially gutted and the loss has been estimated at around Rs 40 lakh.

According to the Mapusa fire station, the fire was reported around 2.51 am after police staff raised an alarm. A team of fire personnel rushed to the spot and began extinguishing the fire.

Two fire tenders were used to douse the flames that erupted on the ground floor of the building and spread to the mezzanine floor. A fire hydrant installed in the town market was also used by the personnel to fight the fire and they managed to bring the flames under control after one and half hour.

Though the exact cause of fire is not known yet, it is suspected that it was a result of a short circuit. The Society has suffered a heavy loss, as stock of

goods involving groceries, seven computers, two air-conditioners and roof have been destroyed in the fire. The Mapusa fire station managed to save property worth around Rs 50 lakh.

The firefighting team comprised of Mapusa station in-charge Bosco Ferrao, sub officer Shivaji Naik, leading firefighters Vishnu Gawas, Suraj Shetgaonkar, firefighters Subhash Majik, Hitesh Parab, Prakash Gadkar, Prashant Shetgaonkar, Rupesh Gawas, Govind Dessai and Swapnesh Kalangutkar.

A team of Mapusa police comprising of police sub-inspector Kiran Naik, assistant sub-inspector Dayanand Malik and head constable Dinesh Satlekar conducted the panchanama and registered a fire incident case.

Chairman of the Mapusa Consumers Credit Society Rupa Bhakta said that the Society has suffered a loss of over Rs 40 lakh due to the fire incident.
