Nagpur: The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) on Saturday demolished part of 33 shops situated on the right side on Sitabuldi main market lane for completion of World Trade Centre, the erstwhile Glocal Square mall.
Owners of the shops supported the demolition drive by vacating goods in the last three days.
The NIT team, led by executive engineer PP Dhankar, enforcement officer Manohar Patil and divisional officer Pankaj Ambhorkar carried out the drive till late night with the help of police.
The length of 33 shops was around 20m. The NIT has razed 8m portion of the shops from the rear side. Pune’s Goel Ganga Infrastructure will construct the mall up to these eight portions.
After completion of the mall which is likely by the end of 2020, the shopkeepers will get shops there. Then, the shopkeepers are supposed to demolish the remaining portion of 12m. Till then, the shopkeepers will continue to run their business.
NIT officials told TOI that even shopkeepers have entered into an MoU with the developer since the order was passed by the Supreme Court (SC). “Also, the developer assured to construct wall for shops and erect fencing between the wall and mall under construction,” they said.
The city’s biggest mall is being developed on 6.5 acres under Abhyankar Road Widening and Buty Mahal Street Scheme. There were 148 shops on Abhyankar Road, on right side of Sitabuldi main market lane and in the space between these two roads.
The NIT had acquired land for widening Abhyankar Road and mall. Then, the NIT leased out the entire land to Buty family for development of the mall. The family had entered into an agreement with Goel Ganga Infrastructure for developing the mall.
Some shopkeepers, including the 18 who owned 33 shops on Sitabuldi main market lane, were opposing the project. On April 24, 2015, the NIT had issued notices to 33 shops for vacating the 8m portion. The shopkeepers had challenged the notice in the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court, which set aside NIT’s notices.
The NIT, along with the developer and some shopkeepers of Abhyankar Road, challenged HC’s order in the Supreme Court. On January 22, SC ruled in favour of the project.
Accordingly, the NIT team went to demolish part structure of 33 shops on Tuesday. The shopkeepers had requested three-day time to vacate goods.
