Surat: Railway traffic between Sanjan and Umbergaon railway stations in South Gujarat was affected for a couple of hours because of a minor crack in the railway track on Saturday. Emergency repair of the broken track was carried out by Umbergaon railway staff and the rail traffic resumed normal operations within three hours.

Official sources said railway staff during inspection saw that a portion of the rail track had a four-inch fracture. The message was immediately passed on to the engineering department and trains approaching from Sanjan railway station were asked to lower their speed.

MP Sharma, station manager of Umbergaon railway station, told TOI, “The welded joint, which connected two rail tracks, was fractured. The engineering staff placed a new fishplate to enable fast and temporary repair of the track which allowed continuous movement of trains through the section. Only two trains were delayed for about an hour. The rail traffic was normalized within three hours.”
