Among the elderly, hip fractures are a rather common injury, but very few undergo surgery to address the issues due to old age. Many people in their eighties refuse hospital admission and treatment. In this scenario, imagine a nonagenarian undergoing a surgery to walk independently post hip surgery. And that is exactly what 95-year-old Matuben has done.
The patient was successfully operated on for hip fracture, a procedure which is known as hemiarthroplasty and is a very rare operation for this age.
On Saturday, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences and Research received a patient with hip fracture. "Fixing the fracture was difficult due to age of the patient. However, bearing in mind her age, we have managed to perform a surgery. Now, within a week, she is fine and able to walk on her own with support," stated a press release from the hospital.
"As she was very old, we conducted her tests from radiology and laboratory in emergency. Post operation, urine output was inadequate for which the nephrology department treated her. Another difficulty faced was increased level of sugar in blood which was also managed by the emergency medicine department," stated the release.
Matuben was discharged on Friday after the surgery and her medical reports were normal. "I am able to walk and can do my routine work. The most important thing is to walk independently, at this age. The surgery is a blessing for me," said the patient.
