Petitioner says the establishment of toll plaza is illegal

A local court in Villupuram on Thursday stayed the collection of toll at the Morattandi toll plaza near the inter-State border at Gorimedu from February 7 to 20.

District munsif-cum-judicial magistrate S. Venkatesan granted the interim stay restraining the authorities concerned from collecting toll at the plaza on a PIL plea filed by advocate Arumugam.

When the matter came up for hearing on Thursday, the counsel of the petitioner submitted that the establishment of the toll plaza at Morattandi was illegal and in violation of the rules as it could not be located within 10 km of a town.

The toll plaza was located at a distance of 3 km from the inter-State border at Thiruchitrambalam Road and the authorities had been illegally collecting money.

The court directed the Superintendent of Police to provide adequate security to commuters passing through the toll plaza. The judge directed the authorities at the toll plaza to stop collecting toll during the stipulated period.

A police force was deployed at the toll to implement the order.
