PUNE: The Bharati Vidyapeeth police on Thursday arrested a former assistant manager of an automobile showroom in Ambegaon for duping a car dealer and stealing a passenger vehicle worth Rs5.11 lakh.
The suspect, Kapil Junawane (25) of Bibvewadi, had taken the vehicle from the dealer's showroom at Wagholi on April 28 on the pretext of performing a puja and sold it to a person in Shirur for Rs90,000. "The fraud came to light last month following an audit at the showroom. The dealer lodged the complaint on Thursday after he came to know about Junawane's involvement in the fraud," said Madhukar Salunkhe, assistant inspector, Bharati Vidyapeeth police.
Salunkhe said the suspect worked as an assistant manager in the dealer's Ambegaon showroom between 2016 and August 2018. In April last year, the automobile firm's finance department asked the dealer to book a passenger vehicle in the name of one person. "After some days, the department informed the dealer to cancel the booking due to incomplete documentation," Salunkhe said.
He said that the dealer had been using the vehicle for test rides in his showrooms.
"On April 28, the suspect made a gate pass and mentioned on it that he was driving the vehicle out of the showroom for conducting a puja. Junawane then went to the dealer's showroom in Wagholi and drove away with the vehicle," Salunkhe said.
In August, Junawane left his job. Between April and January this year, no one was aware that the vehicle was missing.
