BERHAMPUR: Girls outshone boys in the 23rd convocation of Berhampur University held here on Thursday. Of the 31 gold medals given away to students for scoring the highest marks in different subjects, nineteen of them were girls.
Ganeshi Lal, governor-cum-chancellor of universities, who presided over the convocation presented the medals to the awardees. These included students of various postgraduate courses and the graduates who scored topped the examination held last year. Apart from the gold medals, the university also conferred five persons with D.Litt one with D. Sc and 83 PhD degrees.
The university, however, did not present the prestigious honorary D.Litt degree to anyone this time. Though a senior official of the university said they could not select any one to present such a prestigious degree, insiders said the authorities did not want to face criticism for their choice of candidates. So they stayed away from choosing one altogether.
Lal on Thursday said students of the university have to play a crucial role in building a new India, where there will be equal opportunity for all.
“The country today stands at the threshold of a new era of development and progress. At this juncture, young men and women passing out of the university have to ensure that all are educated and healthy and every woman is secure and empowered,” he said while delivering the address at the convocation of Berhampur University here.
The university had earlier come under flak from several quarters on the selection of the persons to present the honorary D.Litt degrees. Not only Berhampur University, other state universities in the state had also faced similar criticism for their choice of D.Litt awardees. “We don’t want to get into such a controversy this year,” a senior university official said. ++
