Surat: Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) will be giving Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) 80 per cent grant for its Rs108 crore Wild Valley Biodiversity Park project.
MoHUA had invited project proposals from 100 smart cities under public open space, sustainable mobility, urban e-governance and ICT and social and organizational innovation categories.
Twenty-six projects were selected from 67 and three of them happened to be that of SMC, but only 13 approved for grant for now after presentation on January 21 in New Delhi.
SMC will develop an urban forest on 68 hectares of land in Althan and Bamroli area of the city under its Wild Valley Biodiversity Park project. Over six lakh small and big trees will be planted in the area which will also have a cycle track, water bodies, walking tracks and play area among other things. SMC will get Rs86 crore for the project whereas the remaining amount will be given by the state government, sources said.
“This will help create a huge green open space in the middle of the city and reduce carbon dioxide and increase oxygen content. It will also provide a new recreational centre to the people of the city,” said CY Bhatt, deputy commissioner, SMC. The civic body expects to get grant for its two other projects from the MoHUA too.
