7,000 kg of banned plastic products seized from Madurai shops

MADURAI: Enforcement teams have seized 7,828 kg of plastic products from shops here since January 1, after a ban on such products came into effect in Tamil Nadu. They have collected a fine of Rs 2.52 lakh from the erring shops in this period.
The blanket ban on single use plastic products and plastic bags of less than 50 micron came into effect on January 1.
The Madurai Corporation constituted 20 teams to ensure that the ban on plastics was adhered to. These teams comprised 20 sanitary inspectors, 35 thooimai kavalar (watchers tasked with the duty of keeping the city clean) and 100 sanitary workers. They have been checking the shops in the 100 wards for the banned plastic products on a regular basis.
