KOLKATA: On the lines of illustrious B.Com morning section in St Xavier's College which has produced illustrious alumni including industrialists L.N Mittal and Sanjiv Goenka, St Xavier's University will replicate similar commerce program from the upcoming academic session. The classes are slated to begin at the New Town campus between 7 am and 12 noon. In the first batch intake capacity has been kept at 120 who will be divided into two sections.
“Following traditions of St Xavier’s College which has the B.Com morning section for the last 83 years we shall start a morning section at the university. This morning section will cater to the students staying near and for those students who will benefit for their CA, CFA or CS courses which they can continue,” said vice-chancellor of St Xavier’s University, Fr Felix Raj.
He pointed out that the morning commerce section at St Xavier’s College Kolkata was a top draw and attracted mainly students from the city’s business community who took up the course and could return to their office post 10 am. “It was also for people who would benefit holding a job and study bachelors program simultaneously,” Fr. Felix Raj said.
Another major beginning at the university campus from the next academic session will be the launch of a Law School. Fr. Felix Raj added, “we shall begin with two courses - B.Com LLB and BA, LLB.” At the 3rd Foundation Day ceremony on Friday, St. Xavier’s University VC added, “Xaverian had been advising us on this matter. The course will begin this year with necessary provision from the Bar Council of India.”
The research and library building was inaugurated at the campus by governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and director of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) Partha Pratim Chakrabarti. The building will house PhD departments, law and management libraries.
While delivering the Foundation Day lecture, Chakrabarti said, “a bigger revolution is in the making where all disciplines are beginning to converge. Technology, which spread its bastion over various aspects considered epitomes of human intelligence covering ground from chess playing to natural language conversation, has now begun to touch unexpected domains like the creativity with new music and paintings emerging from machines that are indistinguishable from a Beethoven or a Rembrandt. Who knows when we will begin to see automation producing new Tagore songs or a newly churned Felu-Da story with all the hallmarks of the great masters.’
Governor Tripathi applauded the achievements of the Jesuit institutions across the country including the newly set up university at New Town.
