BHUBANESWAR: A day after the BJP youth wing activists hit the streets against the Naveen Patnaik-led government over lack of jobs in Odisha, the ruling BJD on Friday retaliated against the NDA government with the similar jibe.
Hitting back at the Centre for "failing" in its promise to provide two crore jobs every year, as committed before the 2014 polls, the BJD MLAs marched from the state assembly to the Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum to the President of India through governor Ganeshi Lal.
“If two crore jobs would have been provided every year, more than 10 crore youths could have been appointed by the central government and in this Odisha could at least have a share of 50 lakh youths employed in different central government jobs,” said BJD leader Sanjay Das Burma.
Before knocking the governor’s door, the ruling party raised the issue in the state assembly as both the Congress and BJP legislators tried to disrupt assembly proceedings over various issues forcing speaker PK Amat to adjourn the house for an hour.
As lack of job opportunities for the youths could be a major issue in the forthcoming assembly and general elections, all major parties try to outsmart each other on the issue. Congress president Rahul Gandhi has recently criticized both the state and central governments over widespread unemployment in Odisha.
The BJD leaders accused the BJP of spreading misinformation on job opportunities in Odisha instead of creating employment opportunity for the youth.
The ruling party has claimed that the state government has appointed nearly a lakh youths directly in different government jobs and created employment opportunities for nearly 15 lakh youths in the micro, small and medium enterprises and industry sector.
Criticizing the Centre of using natural resources of the state through its PSUs, the BJD said there was hardly any instance of appointing the aspiring youths of Odisha in any of its PSUs in visible numbers.
“Let the BJP government say as to how many youths of Odisha have been given appointment during the last five years,” said BJD leader Rohit Pujari.
Criticizing the BJD leaders, leader of opposition Narasingha Mishra said they had urged the speaker to initiate discussions on unemployment and farmers’ issues.
“Had the government taken any interest to listen to the grievances of farmers, there would have been no stalemate in the assembly. We believe, this is a lifeless government,” Mishra said.
BJP leader Rabi Naik said the state government has failed in providing proper skill development training to the youths of the state which could be a major reason behind lack of employment opportunities in Odisha.
