A 17-year-old boy tried to save the man, who was at the lake with his wife, before ambulances arrived.

Onlookers crowded along the fence of a trail in the park as emergency services worked on him a few metres from the lake's shores in dense bush.

Family members screamed and were seen weeping and consoling each other after watching the man die in front of them.

Police will investigate whether the man suffered a medical episode and prepare a report for the coroner.
