Mangaluru: The stage is all set for the fourth Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony of the Dharmasthala Bahubali at Ratnagiri under the leadership of D Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari, from Saturday.
The ceremony was awaited since 12 years, with the last one in 2007, and is expected to outdo all the previous ones in measures of grandeur and significance.

Though Mahamastakabhisheka ceremonies start on Saturday and will be inaugurated by chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, the first anointment will take place only on February 16. There shall be 1,008 kalashas that can be brought by devotees for each day. Also, there are Shraddha Kalasha, Divya Kalasha and Janamangala Kalasha costing Rs 25,000, Rs 5,555, and Rs 1,001 respectively; which can be brought on all three days from February 16-18.

The Panchamrutha anointment shall take place on February 17 and 18, consisting of milk, turmeric, sandalwood, red sandalwood, saffron and Shantidhaara, which can be bought at a sum of Rs1 lakh each. A total 15 people will be allowed for each kind of anointment. The last two days also have kalashas with the fluids of tender coconut, sugarcane extract, flour, flowers and chatush-kona kalasha; which can be bought at a price of Rs 50,000. These kalashas are available for purchase only on the last two days, as the first day anointment proceedings shall be conducted by the Heggade family.

On Saturday, minister for irrigation, Kannada and culture, D K Shivakumar, will inaugurate the 15-minute laser show ‘Bahubali Ithihasa’ that will be the main attraction and will be staged every day. The ceremonies from Saturday onwards will be presided by Vardhaman Sagarji muni and Pushtadantha Sagarji muni, Jain monks, presently undergoing their chaturmasa rituals at Shravanabelagola. Bhattarakas’ of all Jain mutts in Karnataka as well as Jain monks from North India will be present.

While the first Mahamastakabhisheka on this second-tallest monolith of Lord Bahubali in the state at 39 feet was held in 1982 when it was installed, the subsequent Mahamastakhabisheka was held in 1994 and 2007.

Master architect Renjal Gopal Shenoy took up the work of sculpting the monolith for the Sri Kshetra as per a wish expressed by late D Rathnavarma Heggade and his wife Rathnamma, the parents of Veerendra Heggade. It was Veerendra Heggade and his wife Hemavathi who consecrated the idol at Ratnagiri in 1982 and also initiated the first Mahamastakhabisheka rituals.

A cultural procession depicting ‘Bharatheshwara Digvijaya’ in its true splendour will be taken from the bathing ghat to the main temple dwara on Wednesday, which will be the other attraction of the event. The procession will see people wearing costumes of different regions and others dressed up as ‘soldiers’ to depict the grand entry of a ‘Chakravarthi’ coming back to his capital from a conquest.

The anointment event will also see daily feeding go on as usual at the dining halls of Sri Manjunatha Temple. Separate feeding arrangements are being put in place for devotees coming for Mahamastakhabisheka.
