Madurai college students form human chain to spread voting awareness

MADURAI: Around 500 students from Lady Doak College in Madurai on Friday participated in a human chain to create awareness about the upcoming general election and about the importance of voting. The initiative was organised by Ward Number 191, Madurai-north constituent assembly. District collector S Natarajan participated in the event.
The human chain was formed from NOYES Matriculation Higher Secondary School at PT Rajan Road to the bus stand near Kendriya Vidyalaya School at Narimedu.
Natarajan spoke about the importance of voting. For the first-time voters, he explained on how an electronic voting machine should be used. He also explained to the students about the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) and on how one would be able to verify that the vote polled by him/ her goes to the correct candidate within a seven second duration.
The college administration said this was their first awareness programme for the upcoming general elections and they would conduct a series of events in the near future to create awareness about voting.
