Where there's a willow there's a way

Not sure our new cricket coach [January 26] gets it. I've got no problem with him not walking, even when he's clearly hit the cover off the ball – provided he doesn't make a fuss when incorrectly given out. The real problem is lying about it for more than 10 years. Not exactly "elite honesty", Mr Langer. Richard Gray, Nundah, Qld

Who cares how often Justin Langer meditates or how many motivational quotes he can come up with! The really telling part of Jane Cadzow's story was Langer's refusal to walk when he had nicked a ball. This reveals, to me, the true essence of the man: someone lacking honour and integrity when even to this day he is unable/unwilling to admit to his lack of sportsmanship. How can he instil honour and integrity to the game when he seems unable to live by those qualities in his own life? Irena Davis, Ocean Grove, Vic

Australasia rising

How interesting that the bulk of migrants to Australia are still English and New Zealanders [January 26]. So we're not being swamped by Muslims, boat people or Sudanese. I recently asked a newly arrived English immigrant why he chose Australia as his new home. Too many migrants back home, he complained, without a trace of irony. Gudrun Stylianou, Bega, NSW

Two of Us

Two migrants [January 26], one from Angola, the other from Croatia, proudly work as cleaners on low wages and can, in a down-to-earth manner, talk to prime ministers and leaders of other nations without any airs or graces. In Australia, we have social mobility. The first-generation children of working-class migrants can attend university and enter the professions. That is something all Australians should cherish. Garry Walsh, Vaucluse, NSW

F: JANE BURREN Can't forgive the lying and his failure to walk ["Where there's a willow there's a way", January 26]. No respect for Justin Langer, and puzzled as to why he is viewed as the one to fix the poxy team culture following Sandpapergate.

F: NORM LOCKETT So Justin Langer admits he hit the ball when he was on 76 but didn't walk even though he knew he was out. Isn't that cheating?

F: GEORGIOS BOOTS Langer is one of the most resilient cricketers ever. A legend.

T @SAMMOSTYN Thanks @GMegalogenis ["Australasia rising", January 26]. Such a thoughtful piece on the reality of Australia's makeup and the opportunities it presents, so long as we move the conversation towards who we are becoming.

F: CON KANELLIS Haven't heard any political party or government outline a strategy to counter Australia's deforestation [Spotlight, January 26]. Another example of negative leadership. No viable vision for the future!

F: JANE CAMENS Great little story [Two of Us, January 26]. I envisage a Steptoe & Son-style comedy series based on these two, written by The Office team. Dry, sarcastic and incisive.

F: ANOHS LLIHPMEH Bless and thank you ladies! Without you, we would be in a mess.
