BJD blames Centre for lack of jobs, hits streets

Bhubaneswar: A day after BJP youth wing members took out a rally to protest against the Naveen Patnaik-government over lack of jobs in Odisha, the BJD retaliated against the NDA government with a similar move.
On Friday, the BJD MLAs marched from the assembly to the Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum to the President of India through governor Ganeshi Lal. They said the Centre failed to provide two crore jobs every year as promised by the BJP before the 2014 polls.

“Had two crore jobs been provided every year, more than 10 crore youths would have been appointed by the Centre and 50 lakh youths in Odisha would have got central government jobs,” said BJD leader Sanjay Das Burma. Before taking out the rally, the ruling party members raised the issue in the assembly as both Congress and BJP legislators tried to disrupt proceedings over various issues forcing speaker P K Amat to adjourn the house for an hour.

As lack of job opportunities for youths could be a major poll plank, all parties are trying to outsmart each other on the issue. Recently, Congress president Rahul Gandhi criticized both the state and central governments over widespread unemployment in Odisha.

The BJD leaders accused the BJP of spreading misinformation on job opportunities in Odisha instead of creating employment opportunities for youths. The ruling party claimed that the state government has appointed nearly a lakh youth directly in different government jobs and created employment opportunities for nearly 15 lakh youths in the micro, small and medium enterprises and industry sectors.

Criticising the Centre for using natural resources of the state through its PSUs, the BJD leaders said there is hardly any instance of appointing aspiring youths of Odisha in any of its PSUs in visible numbers. “Let the BJP government tell how many youths from Odisha have been appointed in the last five years,” said BJD leader Rohit Pujari.

Criticizing the BJD, leader of opposition Narasingha Mishra said they had urged the speaker to initiate discussions on unemployment and farmer issues. “Had the government taken any interest to listen to the grievances of farmers, there would have been no stalemate in the assembly. We believe this is a lifeless government,” Mishra said.

BJP leader Rabi Naik said the state government has failed to provide proper skill development training to the youths of the state and it could be a major reason behind lack of employment opportunities in Odisha.
