Commissioner Varsha Joshi lays out waste management plan

All garbage-composting vehicles in the North Delhi Municipal Corporation will be fitted with GPS trackers by February 15 to improve waste disposal, Commissioner Varsha Joshi told the Standing Committee on Thursday.

While detailing various steps being taken by the Corporation to implement solid waste management by laws, the Commissioner said that the vehicles would be tracked at a control room to be set up at the civic centre. A Corporation spokesperson said that the trackers would also be set up on private vehicles hired by the civic body apart from 250 large and small vehicles owned by the Corporation.

‘Model plans’

She also informed the committee that ‘model plans’ for waste management were being developed for different types of localities such as markets, unauthorised and authorised colonies in consultation with resident and market welfare associations. And that ward-wise committees, comprising the area councillor and RWA members would be formed to ensure implementation of SWM by laws within a month.

Ms. Joshi also took note of the complaints made by councillors regarding attendance of sanitation staff and said that a new biometric system linked to Aadhaar would soon be put in place which would help avoid fraud.

Alternative employment

Additionally, distribution of safai karmacharis in wards across the Corporation would be rationalised.

The Commissioner also stressed on the need to ensure alternative employment for ragpickers who she argued had an important role to play in the waste management process.
