The government will soon launch an internship programme for all engineering students in the State, Higher Education Minister K.T. Jaleel has said.
The initiative will be rolled out this year with the final-year batches which will graduate soon. It is envisaged on the lines of the house-surgency system for medical graduates. The internship programme would be of one-year duration, Dr. Jaleel told media persons here on Thursday.
Discussions with reputed private firms were in their final phase. Steps had been initiated to seek clarification from the University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education prior to the launch of the programme, he said.
“The initiative is expected to benefit engineering graduates in the job market. While the informal system of internship that existed currently provided little importance for imparting skill and competency, government aimed at ensuring that the budding engineers were provided hands-on training that would enable them to become socially-conscious technocrats in the long run,” the Minister said.
