Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar, general secretary of the All-India Jamiyyathul Ulema, has urged the people to elect secular political parties in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to protect constitutional values and strengthen democratic institutions.

Addressing an event to mark the conclusion of Hind Safar, a yatra undertaken by the Sunni Students Federation from Jammu and Kashmir to Kerala here on Thursday, he said that a country with a population of over 1.2 billion should not elect rulers who address the concerns of only some corporate houses. It was unethical to work only for a ‘vote bank’ and not address the basic needs of the people. It would destroy the democratic ethos of the country, he pointed out.

The Musliyar said that elected representatives should ensure the representation of weaker sections in the corridors of power. “They should correct themselves if the politics of hatred they had imbibed decades ago is found to be reflecting in policy making,” he added.
