Cong slams Modi, says govt weakening constitutional bodies
TNN | Feb 8, 2019, 03:54 ISTNEW DELHI: Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday accused the government of using the President's address to the joint session of Parliament for political “gains” and dubbed it a compilation of PM Narendra Modi's rally speeches.
Speaking in Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks to the President's address, Kharge also charged the Modi government with weakening constitutional bodies, using probe agencies against rivals and inflating figures to mislead people about its work. “Investigation agencies like CBI and ED are being used to throttle those who do not agree with the government,” the Congress leader said.
He criticised the government’s actions like demonestisation, GST implementation and the Rafale deal and said BJP came to power in 2014 by “misleading the people which it is still continuing”.
Targeting Modi, who was present in the House, Kharge said BJP came to power by making false promises and its leaders had still not stopped lying and misleading people.
He cited figures to assert that his party had “saved” the nation, fed it and gave it milk and education. “Give us some credit. But if your body is full of hatred, then you cannot see it,” he said. “It is one thing to make a speech and thump the desk to laud it and another to save the country and democracy,” he added.
On the President’s address, Kharge said, “The entire speech looks like a compilation of what the PM speaks in the House and outside. Government has used it for political gains.”
He accused Modi of being arrogant and not consulting cabinet colleagues on key decisions. He asked why the government was not waiving off farm loans across the country when it could waive off loans of Rs 1.10 lakh crore of corporate groups.
Accusing the government of inflating development figures, he asked if the GDP growth rate was so good as it claimed, then why was the unemployment rate "so high" and why was investment not picking up. Kharge cited media reports on an NSSO survey which said unemployment rate was 6.1% in 2017-18.
Taking a swipe at BJP members, he asked them not to be a "slave" to the PM even as they were elected in his name.
