Rangasamy praises Modi and says it is a privilege to be labelled his ‘brother’

Hinting at a possible tie-up with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for Lok Sabha polls, All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) chief and former Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Thursday said he was privileged to be considered “brother” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I take it as a compliment to be considered as brother of Mr. Modi. To be considered as a brother to a person who is doing good for the country is welcome. The AINRC has complimented the Prime Minister for bringing out a good Budget,” he said, responding to questions on the sidelines of AINRC Foundation Day celebrations. While referring to the style of functioning of AINRC chief, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy recently said Mr. Rangasamy was like Mr. Modi’s brother. The former Chief Minister thanked Mr. Narayanasamy for the analogy.

Expressing confidence in AINRC retaining the Lok Sabha seat, Mr. Rangasamy said the party had an alliance with the AIADMK in the 2011 Assembly elections and in 2016 Nellithope byelections. The party had extended support to the AIADMK nominee in the 2105 Rajya Sabha elections, he said.

Decision on candidate

However, the party had contested the last Lok Sabha elections alone. Mr. Rangasamy said and added that the candidate would be announced at the right time.

Commenting on the power struggle between Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi and the ruling Congress, he said Mr. Narayanasamy, while holding a Cabinet post in the United Progressive Alliance government at Centre, had acknowledged the role of the Lt. Governor in the administration of Union Territories.

The Chief Minister was aware of the powers of the Lt. Governor in the U.T., Mr. Rangasamy added.

The Chief Minister had been trying to put the blame on the Lt. Governor to cover up the failure of the Congress government in implementing welfare and development schemes.

The government had failed to implement any new scheme in the last two-and-a-half years, he added.

Instead of trying to put the blame on the Lt. Governor, the Chief Minister should focus on governance.

To a question on criticism against AINRC for not taking up issues concerning public, he said the people would decide on its role during the Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier, he hoisted the party flag in its new office at Reddiarpalayam and performed puja along with party supporters.
