TIRUPUR: The district child welfare committee will conduct an inquiry into a 14-year-old married girl giving birth to a baby in Tirupur Government Hospital recently and her child marriage.
The child marriage victim and her newborn were doing fine in the hospital after delivery on Monday while her 22-year-old husband, parents and in-laws are being questioned by district child protection unit officials.
A Childline official said the child marriage victim and her parents, hailing from Madurai district, migrated to Tirupur district six years ago. The parents had been employed in a copra drying unit in Kangeyam for more than five years. The girl was going to a government school in the area.
“After completion of Class VIII last year, she stopped going to school. She then started working in the copra drying unit with her parents. In April last year, the girl was married to a relative who was working in a copra drying unit at Uthukuli. The whole family moved to the copra drying unit at Uthukuli a few months ago," the official said.
The district child protection unit is checking whether the 14-year-old mother can take care of the baby. “The district children welfare committee will take a call on this issue. After which, legal procedures will be followed,” the official said.
