MARGAO: A fibre boat manufacturing unit, ‘Boat Craft’, located at the Cuncolim industrial estate, was completely gutted in a blaze that broke out Thursday afternoon. Besides several fibre boats stocked in the unit, tools and machinery were also destroyed.
35 fire fighters were engaged in battling the inferno in an exercise that lasted for nearly five hours, deputy director, fire and emergency services (F&ES), Nitin Raikar, told TOI. 12 fire tenders as well as several fire hydrants in the industrial estate were used to extinguish the flames, it was informed.
“It took us over 2.5 hours to bring the fire under control and another equally long time to douse the flames. An excavator was also used in the fire-fighting exercise,” Raikar said.
While the fire brigade personnel were yet to ascertain the exact cause of the incident, the dry grass in the vicinity that caught fire is believed to have engulfed the plant. The incident occurred at around 12.30 pm.
The fire fighters also evacuated some 10 persons, all women, working in the adjacent industrial unit who were found to have been traumatised by the incident, Raikar said. No casualties were however reported.
John Fernandes, the owner of the unit, said that the loss could run into crores of rupees. The F&ES is conducting further investigation.
