MUMBAI: To provide better visibility to passengers, Western Railway is replacing over 1,000 train indicators on all suburban platforms between Churchgate and Virar stations at a cost of Rs 4.1 crore. This move, said officials, will help reduce passenger complaints about non-operational indicators. The work is expected to be completed by March-end, said WR’s chief PRO Ravinder Bhakar.

“While the exterior of the surface mount device-type LED indicators will be Siemens gray/blue, the display will be in white,” said Bhakar. “Also, they will be placed at a 5-degree inclination for better visibility. Both sides of the indicator will be provided with individual control card and power supply unit for better reliability and the display brightness can be adjusted as per ambient light.”

A provision has also been made to display the platform number on indicators installed on foot over-bridges for commuters’ convenience. “The new indicators’ mounting arrangement and upper hood have been modified to stop the entry of rainwater so that they do not malfunction,” Bhakar said, adding that cleaning/replacement of the acrylic sheet and LED cards too has been simplified.
