HYDERABAD: A 17-year-old Intermediate student was chased and attacked with a sickle by a 19-year-old boy from her neighbourhood at Satya Nagar in Barkatpura on Wednesday morning. The girl, who suffered multiple injuries, including a fracture on her skull, is battling for life at a private hospital. Police said the two knew each other from childhood and the girl had turned down repeated proposals from the boy who had been pestering her for over a year. The assailant was arrested later in the day.

As the victim was being troubled by the assailant, C Bharath, a first-year degree student, the girl’s family had approached the SHE Teams seeking help on Jan 7. The boy was counselled and asked to give an undertaking stating that he would not trouble her in future. No case was registered then as the girl’s family was unwilling to lodge a formal complaint. Cops said that despite the counselling Bharath continued to stalk the girl and her father had even reprimanded him.

On Wednesday, the girl left her residence around 8.45 am and started walking towards her uncle’s residence in the neighbourhood. Her uncle was to drop her at college. “En route, she noticed Bharath standing at a distance. Seeing him she turned back and started walking towards her home. On noticing that Bharath was following her, she started to run,’’ deputy commissioner of police (East Zone) M Ramesh said.

But instead of taking the daily route to her home, she entered a narrow lane.

Girl suffered stab injuries, skull fracture

“A she was running in the snarrow lane, she tripped on a water hose and fell. Bharath attacked her indiscriminately with a sickle on her neck and other body parts, but ran away when he saw locals. The profusely bleeding victim was first rushed to a local hospital and later to Yashoda Hospital, Malakpet,” the DCP said.

The team of doctors attending on the victim said she has suffered a fracture on her skull apart from multiple stab injuries on neck and hands.

Later in the day, Bharath was traced to a location on the banks of the Musi at Chaderghat. He has been booked under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 354D (stalking), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the Arms Act.
