AHMEDABAD: Sleuths of the monitoring cell under DGP Shivanand Jha raided a gambling den located just next to city police headquarters in Shahibaug on Wednesday night. Eight persons, including a cop posted at the HQ were arrested, police said on Thursday.
“We recovered seven mobile phones, Rs 20,000 cash and two vehicles from the spot, together worth Rs 1.68 lakh,” said a senior police official.
Busting police claims of strict vigilance on bootleggers and gambling dens, a gambling den thriving under cops’ nose, is egg on their face.
The arrested are Dipak alias Dipu Patil (36) — the cop — Majidkhan Pathan, Vishal Vaghela (20), Nilesh Chavda, Ajay Dantani (24), Manohar Bhagul (46), Alpesh Chauhan (28) and Vijay Parmar. Jha said six of the accused are residents of the police lines just beside the HQ. “We are grilling them about the operation of the den and whether Patil was operating it,” said Jha.
JCP Vipul Agarwal said the site raided was an open plot just beside the HQ. “The accused are either policemen or line boys. We have initiated action against one of the policemen involved and may suspend him, pending inquiry,” Agarwal said.
