MADURAI: The Madurai Corporation on Thursday slapped a fine on shopkeepers in the fruit market for encroaching upon the public space.
Corporation commissioner Aneesh Sekhar visited the integrated fruit market in Mattuthavani and found 16 fruit vendors encroaching upon the path with their baskets and boxes.
They were asked to clear the path and were fined Rs 500 each. Two bigger shops that had extended their shops area beyond the permitted limit were fined Rs 1,000 each.
The commissioner later warned the shopkeepers that they would be relieved of their licences if they continued to encroach on public space.
