Poor sewage management worries residents
TNN | Feb 7, 2019, 07:15 ISTLudhiana: Residents of Guru Arjun Dev Nagar near Dholewal in ward number 41 are troubled with the problem of choked sewerage system for the past over two months. Despite several complaints made to the civic authorities, the problem has not been resolved.
The residents have also complained at the CM office and local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu for looking into the matter.
However, the civic officials claimed that they had visited the area and efforts were being made to resolve the issue. The residents claimed that even after raising the matter with the CM or the local bodies minister, the problem still persists.
Gajjan Singh Jassal, a businessman, said: “We have been raising the demand to solve the problem of choking in the area for the last over two months, but the officials did not take it seriously. The situation has become worse and people are now falling sick or are suffering from water-borne diseases.”
Rupinder Kaur, housewife, said filthy water remained stagnant on the streets most of the time and it was difficult to pass through the road. “Due to the foul smell, we find it tough to even sit inside our houses,” she said.
Meanwhile, zonal commissioner J S Sekhon said: “Earlier also the MC teams had gone there and choking was cleared, but since the entire system is old, it is difficult to find permanent solution at the moment.”
He said the Mayor had given approval for going ahead with super suction cleaning in such areas and they would now take help from a private firm to clear choking instead of banking upon manual cleaning.
