Metro resumes tunnel-boring at Esplanade

KOLKATA: Tunnelling work at Esplanade on the East-West Metro’s underground section till the Sealdah station has resumed. It had remained stalled for two days since Sunday evening, because of the ongoing Centrestate war at the Metro Channel.
The work started a few hours after the sit-in was called off and the crowds dispersed late on Tuesday.
The long-awaited Metro tunnelling, which was initiated on January 25 after an eight-month delay, had ground to a halt from Sunday evening, when trailers carrying precast concrete segments required to build the tunnels couldn’t be brought in from the New Town casting yard. The muck generated by the tunnelling could not be cleared.
Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) — implementing the underwater Metro corridor between Howrah Maidan and Sector V via Esplanade and Sealdah — heaved a sigh of relief when the war on the streets ended. By then, the muck pit at the Esplanade site was overflowing.
Construction of the underground Metro tunnels, dug under the groundwater level at a depth of 25m below the surface, needs TBMs (tunnel-boring machines), one of the most sophisticated technologies in the field of mechanized excavation in an urban setting. But while the TBMs dig tunnels, a large quantity of soil gets thrown up. The muck from the excavation is required to be disposed of in a planned way so that it takes the least possible space and does not turn hazardous.
At least 20 dumpers (10-wheelers), carrying muck, ply in and out of the Esplanade site daily. But with the Metro Channel blocked, the construction site had been filled up and tunnelling had to be stopped.
Therefore, as soon as the crowd thinned on Tuesday evening, KMRC mobilized the dumpers and managed to empty some of the muck throughout the night.
Also, 18-wheeler trailers carrying concrete lining segments were brought in after the twonight break. The East-West tunnels are being built with the precast segments that are transported in trailers from the casting yard in New Town. From Monday, the trailers were barred.
