A man has been caught proposing to his girlfriend in the middle of a busy Sydney street.

The romantic was captured down on one knee when he popped the question on Cooper Wharf road in the city's east.

The bizarre proposal, uploaded to Reddit, attracted dozens of comments from users who were quick to label the man's proposal as 'trashy'.

One user defended the proposal and predicted the location may have been the spot where the couple first met.

Another user said he had proposed to his wife at the car park of a bottle shop.

'I proposed to my wife in a Dan Murphy's car park because that's where we shared our first kiss (and because I thought it would be funny),' he wrote.

Reddit user Rosey0210, who posted captured the moment, was not sure if the woman ended up saying yes.

The strange roadside proposal follows a number of other wild romantic gestures by Australians in recent months.

Western Australian farmer Brendan Boyd proposed to the love of his life last week by cutting into a wheat field with a tractor to spell the message 'Marry Me Emma'.

He shared the unique proposal on Twitter and wrote: 'Luckily I can drive neater than I can write.'

'Luckily I can drive neater than I can write. Found a chaser driver dad #dronegogglesdidtherest #font640d,' the farmer wrote on Twitter

In December 2018, Doctor Dennis Neuen, 27, proposed to his girlfriend Melissa Godwin, 27, through a crossword puzzle that appeared in the Australian magazine Good Weekend.

Only those tho made it to question 25 would have noticed the hidden marriage proposal.

'I got up to "will you marry me Mel" and I just started crying,' Ms Godwin told Fairfax.

The quiz's 25th question read: 'Establish the hidden message in today's quiz: it has been constructed using the first letter of every question.'

A Melbourne woman, whose proposal came as a surprise to her, came up with a savvy solution for her engagement ring shot.

She asked her helpful cousin, who had perfectly manicured hands, to wear her engagement ring and stretch it over the kissing couple because she hadn't done her own nails.

The cousin could be seen awkwardly crouching out of sight as she tried to stay out of the shot.
