A batch of feta cheese sold in IGA supermarkets has been urgently recalled for fears it's contaminated with a potentially deadly bacteria.

The herb and garlic feta cheese, manufactured by Maleny Cheese Factory on the Sunshine Coast, was recalled on Wednesday by Queensland Health authorities.

The urgent recall came after concerns mounted that the cheese was riddled with Escherichia coli, more commonly known as E. coli.

If the cheese, which was sold between January 23 and February 5, was consumed it could cause a person a bout of nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

'Those concerned about their health should seek medical advice or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund,' Queensland Health stated.

The use by date on the products that could have been contaminated is May 21.

The Maleny Cheese Factory has issued a total recall while they conduct an internal investigation.

Factory owner, Markus Bucher, said this was the first time in 15 years that the company has had to issue a product recall.

'We found elevated types of the unwanted bacteria and we are now investigating,' Mr Bucher told The Courier Mail.

'We have used new ingredients in this product and are doing testing on that component.

'Only a handful of products were actually sold - about 20 items - and only to two shops and two market stalls,' he added.

He said that he was confident there was no risk to consumers.

While most cases of E. coli are harmless with symptoms lasting under a week, it can be potentially life-threatening for infants and people with weak immune systems.

'The recall was the result of routine testing by the company,' Food Standards Australia and New Zealand CEO Mark Booth said in a statement.

'A food recall is action taken by a food business to remove unsafe food from distribution, sale and consumption.

'All food businesses must be able to quickly remove food from the marketplace to protect public health and safety. FSANZ coordinates and monitors food recalls in Australia.

'Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) advise that any consumers concerned about their health seek medical advice and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund,' it read.
