South African Tourism and Nepal held roadshows in the city on Wednesday. Tourism authorities of seven countries including Greece, Switzerland, Malaysia and Singapore will take part in a three-day travel and tourism fair to be held at Chennai Trade Centre on Friday.

Tourism and trade officials said foreign tourism boards are looking at Chennai. “Most Indian tourists to Nepal and South Africa are from Delhi and Mumbai. They believe there are a large number of people from the south who may be interested in these destinations once they are pitched,” said a TN tourism official.

South African Tourism kicked off a drive to introduce new regions and new adventure activities for tourists from south India at its annual roadshow held in the city on Wednesday. Nepal Tourism summit – held by India-Nepal Centre, Embassy of Nepal and Indian Institute of Public Policy – stressed the need to create cluster-based tourism zones across the Nepal-India border and to bring together key players in tourism and allied sectors at a time when tourism sector is being revived after the 2014 earth quake in the mountain kingdom.

South African Tourism has come to the city after Chennai became No. 3 among Indian cities in terms of visitors to the African nation. Around 6,000 Chennaiites have visited South Africa between January and September 2018, an increase of 7.7 per cent over the previous year.
