LUCKNOW: Thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds brought day temperatures down in the city on Wednesday. More rainfall is expected on Thursday and Friday. However, the weather will be clear by the weekend.
People woke up to overcast sky in the morning followed by few spells of thundershowers till the night. Though sky remained cloudy throughout the day, total rainfall recorded at Met station in Amausi located in the outskirts of the city was only 1.6 mm. The weather monitoring cell in the Lucknow University in the heart of the city recorded 1.2 mm rainfall.
As cloud cover prevented ground heat from escaping into the atmosphere, mercury remained high during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The minimum temperature 12.6 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal.
At the same time the cloud cover led to decline in temperature during the day. Maximum temperature dropped to 22 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal.
State Met officials said that the western disturbance over Himalayas and moisture feed from the Bay of Bengal are responsible for the change in the weather conditions. The rainfall activity will increase on Thursday. It will, however, decline on Friday and sky is expected to be clear by Saturday. Sunday would be bright and sunny.
The winter rainfall in the city has been moderate so far. Though December was dry, total 23.3 mm rainfall was reported in January and February so far, which is 13% above normal.
