NGT tells North body to take cops’ help

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday directed the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to maintain a vigil on encroachments at Azadpur. Further, the north corporation has been directed to seek help from the Delhi Police to ensure removal of encroachments.

A Bench headed by NGT judicial member Raghuvendra S. Rathore observed that the removal of encroachments from the area should be a continuous exercise and directed the police to provide assistance to the civic body when required.

Air quality monitoring

The directions came when the green panel was hearing a plea moved by city residents Sushil Baheti and Ritesh Goel, who had sought installation of ambient air quality monitoring stations at Azadpur.

However, during the hearing, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) informed the tribunal that the air quality monitoring stations have been installed at the said location.

Additionally, the north corporation submitted before the green tribunal that encroachments that were there earlier was removed.

Disposes plea

Directing authorities to maintain a strict vigil at Azadpur, the tribunal disposed the plea.

In the petition it was alleged that the encroachments were leading to traffic congestion which caused air pollution. Further, it had said that the issue was dealt by the Public Grievances Commission of the Delhi government, which had directed Deputy Commissioner (Civil Lines Zone), north corporation to ensure removal of encroachments on a regular basis.
