Canberra shooter Steve Negus wins target rifle world title

Canberra shooter Steve Negus won the gold medal at the long-range target shooting world championships in New Zealand earlier this week, completing an Australian trifecta.

Negus finished first ahead of Mitchell Bailey with Duncan Davies claiming the bronze to complete the Australian top three in stage two at The Seddon Range at Trentham in unpredictable wind conditions.

The more than 300 competitors each had 15 shots on the 900 and 1000 yard ranges to add to Tuesday's 800-yard event. Bailey is the son of Saturday's Ballinger Belt winner Jim Bailey.

Competitors moved to the third stage of competition on Thursday at 800, 900 and 1000 yards, with the top 10 going through to shoot for the individual world championships final on the 1000 yard range.

The action continues over the weekend with the world teams championships being contested on Saturday and Sunday.

The teams will compete for the Palma Trophy, known as the America's Cup of Target Shooting. Friday will be a practice day for all teams contesting the Palma Trophy.
