Coimbatore: A week after TOI reported that the massive tree plantation drive at the Madukkarai block panchayat was a big failure and not a single plant was seen along the stretches of Nachipalayam village panchayat, officials have started tree plantation drive in the area. So far, 120 saplings have been planted along the roads of Pachampalayam and Mookarai villages.
TOI had in its report said only boards put up by the village panchayat remain as witnesses to the tree planation drive that was carried out in 2016. According to an RTI reply obtained by activist Daniel Jesudas, saplings worth Rs 1.44 crore were planted in Madukarai block during 2015-16 and 2016-17 under a massive tree plantation scheme. The government had allotted Rs 1,100 per plant to increase the green cover in the area.
While villagers said they were saddened to see that not a single tree has survived, officials blamed it on water scarcity.
Based on TOI report, District Rural Development Agencies (DRDA) project officials inspected the villages. And the plantation drive was commenced soon.
“Road laying works have been going on in the villages under the National Rurban Mission. The workers, who are involved in road laying, have cleared roadsides, dug small pits and planted the saplings,” said a block-level panchayat official.
The official said a private college has come forward to sponsor the saplings and they are expecting them to arrive in a couple of days.
Another panchayat official said they had stopped the plantation drive in 2017 due to drought-like situation and spent only Rs 2.46 lakh out of the sanctioned Rs 9.60 lakh for planting saplings from Nachipalayam PCF Road till Kaduvarai Thottam.
“We have identified and recovered 60 plants, which we had planted two years ago, with the help of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) workers. They were covered bushes in the absence of proper maintenance,” the official said.
Now, they have cleared all the bushes and secured the plants with tree guards.
