Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation begins preparation for Khandagiri Mela in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started preparation work from Thursday for annual Khandagiri Mela which begins from February 12 in the city.
On the first day, the civic body has cleared encroachment from mela site on the foothill of Khandagiri and Udaygiri Buddhist heritage site. The eviction drive was carried out between Khandagiri square to Charichhak in presence of BMC officials.
During the drive, shops of 10 mobile vendors, 15 bamboo polythene sheds, 22 planted hoardings and seven tin sheet extension sheds were demolished. It has also removed the advertising materials from road side and medians from Airport square to fire station via Siripur.
It will create space for parking of vehicles. The civic body will engage its sanitation workers to keep the mela site clean till the mela is concluded.
It will also prepare the kiosks for traders to set up their stalls. The traders will get their stalls by Friday. BMC will charge Rs 6,000 from the vendors for a temporary stall for the entire mela period. A drama or opera party will have to pay Rs 6000 per day to organise its performance on government land. But the charge is Rs 5000 for the drama and opera parties performing on private land.
For doli or swings, BMC will charge Rs 1500 per day, but a mobile vendor will pay Rs 50 per day to sale his/her items in the mela.
This festival takes off every year on the day of Magha Saptami, the seventh day of lunar month of Magha as per Hindu calendar. It is regarded as auspicious in Hindu religion. Saints, monks and followers of different sects of Hindu religion will congregate here for the 12-day event.
People will enjoy foods, cultural programmes and watch drama or operas in the mela. Besides, they can buy items such as utensils, bamboo and stone carvings and various household items.
