GORAKHPUR: A day after video of a young interfaith couple being assaulted by a mob in Baidoula village of Uttar Pradesh's Siddharthnagar district went viral on social media, police booked 25 people on Wednesday for causing hurt and criminal intimidation after the youth filed a complaint.

Police said 20-year-old Rajesh (name changed) of Siddharthnagar's Barhara village was having an affair with a girl of the same age in his village. However, their families were not ready to accept the relationship as the girl was a Muslim while Rajesh belonged to a Scheduled Caste (SC). After their objection, the couple had started living together in a rented accommodation in the village.

On Monday, the couple left the village together for an unknown destination. On Tuesday morning when they got down from a bus at Baidoula crossing, a mob passed lewd comments and assaulted them without any provocation. The accused finally released the couple after some residents intervened. The attack was filmed by a passerby, who uploaded the video on social media.

On Wednesday, Rajesh filed a complaint with Domariaganj Police against 25 unidentified people for the attack. Domariaganj SHO Pradeep Kumar Singh said, "An FIR has been registered against the 25 accused under sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC."
